‘Historic day’ as youth tribunal centre opens
Saturday 16th January 2010, 2:29PM GMT.

L/R: Deputy Bailiff Richard Collas, Head of children's Convenors Janet Gaggs and new Guernsey Convenor Karen Brady at the official opening of the new CYTC building.
Yesterday community leaders gathered at the opening ceremony in the St Martin’s building, which was formally the sexual health clinic, the Orchard Centre.
Mr Collas said the establishment of the Children’s Law and the tribunal centre was a significant development.
‘It’s the first time we’ve had legislation that states the rights of the child are paramount. It’s not often we see Guernsey leading the world,’ he said.
Mr Collas said those involved in establishing the tribunal had worked hard for many years.
‘It’s appropriate to acknowledge the huge contribution they’ve made. The success of the legislation is going to be down to the convenor and tribunal, but they will not be able to do that without help from everyone else.’
The public had a key role in this, he said. In the longer term, that would make the difference.
