Moth patrol
Monday 18th January 2010, 2:29PM GMT.
HUNDREDS of brown tail moth caterpillars were removed from Chouet headland over the weekend by keen conservationists.
The caterpillars, which are currently hibernating, can cause skin irritation and, in a small number of cases, breathing difficulties.
Over the next two months work parties will be cutting winter protective ‘tents’ containing the caterpillars from vegetation.
The Guernsey Conservation Volunteers began the work in the wind and rain.
‘These things seem to go in 10-year cycles,’ said group coordinator Angela Salmon (pictured).
‘There was an outbreak about 10 years ago. There are so many of them but this is effective control.’
