‘Firefighters demanded up to 30% more’

Wednesday 20th January 2010, 2:29PM GMT.

Tony SpruceFIREFIGHTERS were demanding a pay rise of up to 30% before the airport came to a standstill last May.

Deputy Tony Spruce revealed the figure at yesterday’s tribunal of inquiry into the dispute and added that firefighters had refused to negotiate.

‘They did not give an inch,’ said Deputy Spruce (pictured), a member of the Public Services Department and former vice-chairman of the Public Services Remuneration Committee.

‘It was so frustrating.’

He said the PSRC was considering giving the airport firefighters a higher than average increase if they were prepared to accept modernised pay and conditions.

He said that would improve their working conditions, but the firefighters refused.

Public Services chief officer Adrian Lewis said he had been aware of the pressures on the firefighters before May last year.

He said the department had considered hiring outside staff to help the local firefighters and reduce their antisocial hours.

Anti-social hours, where? what about the Fire,Police and Ambulance services that work 24/7, now that’s anti-social not 05:30 till 22:00,maybe if they were made to give up their part time jobs they’d be prepared to actually work

Come on now, we can’t expect them to actually be committed to the job, the poor little loves should be able to have as many part time jobs as they like (to top up their better than average pay from their “main” job).

Hmmn – i wonder what would happen if the airport firefighters did work overnight – like the arsenal guys. Of course, is there really a need – of course not! The police and ambulance staff do actually work all night = the same cannot be said of the fire brigade who get to sleep in a bed all night and rarely get called out!

The point is – they are there if anything should happen and that is what we are paying for with the airport brigade. When flights and coming and going they are on duty to ensure safety. What price a life?
