THE ‘Ice Cream Man’ was given a special send-off in a horse-drawn hearse yesterday.

Frank Mourant, who died on 11 January, aged 83, became the first person to be carried in a horse-drawn hearse since the Occupation.

Mr Mourant, better known as the Ice Cream Man, delivered treats to the children on the island’s housing estates for more than 40 years.

Gary Vaudin, director of Argent Funeral Services, said it was very apt for him to be brought to church in this way because Mr Mourant was a keen equestrian.

‘This was something that the family asked for,’ said Mr Vaudin. ‘He took an active interest in his granddaughter Jenna’s pony and her equestrian pursuits. That is why it was quite fitting for today.’

Mr Vaudin expected many people to ask for the hearse for future ceremonies.

As a fitting tribute, the Popeye chimes were played as Mr Mourant’s coffin was taken from the church, in reference to the tune that identified his van.

Daughter-in-law Shelley Mourant, 48, said he would have seen the funny side.
