ABOUT 50 motorists appear to have fallen foul of a new parking scheme at North Beach in its first three days.

Some were unaware that nearly 40 newly-marked spaces in the 10-hour zone were for small cars and returned to find tickets on their vehicles.

The Environment Department, which brought in the change, said that warning tickets should have been issued initially.

But Lara Turner got a £30 fixed penalty notice for leaving her Peugeot 207 in one of the spaces because it is more than 3.6 metres long.

‘How many people actually know how long their car is? asked her father, Barry Jameson.

‘It’s a con to get people to pay for an offence when the markings are not laid out properly.

‘I can understand why they want to encourage the use of smaller cars but there should be more notification and anyone who has been issued with a ticket so far should have it cancelled.’

Inspector Trevor Coleman said parking controllers had been warning drivers of the new scheme on Monday.

Why not get a smaller car then? – Why do so many Guernsey people need all these ridiculously oversized cars anyway? It’s ridiculous! As some sort of status symbol perhaps..? I don’t particularly support the argument that often it’s because parents need space for their kids – my mum managed fine with two of us and her Fiat Uno…

I would have thought a couple of hand written temporary signs at ground level would have helped

The new parking scheme is rubbish. Empty 10hr spaces on the North Beach at 9am…..

Steevo..not sure i’d call a Ford Focus a “ridiculous oversized” car, but it’s not allowed in the small spaces.

Dont you mean people in guernsey rather than guernsey people?
Not sure its because of status either.
If i could afford to have a nice big aston i`d have one cos i like them, nothing to do with status, but i suppose some do take that view.

Steevo… for some people, we don’t have a choice over what size car we buy, or what is handed down to us. If I could afford a smart car, a car that doesn’t use to much fuel, a hybrid, I would, but I can’t afford it. I make do with what I can afford. Not everybody in Guernsey can have the luxury of choosing what car they want, sometimes the luxury is just having a car.
