GUERNSEY-FUNDED charity workers in the Dominican Republic who felt the ground beneath them move during the Haiti earthquake told yesterday how injured victims had poured across the border.
Community Partners Association is based just over the border and chairman of the charity for 18 years Jenny Benjamin said their support team had been directly involved with helping those affected.
Guernsey residents sponsor around 250 children in the villages of La Hoya and Bombita – just 15 miles from the border and 90 miles from Haitian capital Port-au-Prince.
The two schools and clinics built and supported by Copa – one built by J. W. Rihoy and with donations from the Guernsey Overseas Aid Commission – were shaken but undamaged.
‘Many of the medical cases have been coming over the border into our villages,’ said Mrs Benjamin. She has been in contact with project director Connie DiLeo, who said the problem they faced was what to do next.
