Treasury minister defends role as States utilities shareholder
Monday 25th January 2010, 1:00PM GMT.
TREASURY minister Charles Parkinson sees no reason why his department should relinquish the role as shareholder for States-owned utilities.
Deputy Parkinson (pictured) responded after Commerce and Employment minister Carla McNulty Bauer said Treasury’s role should be reviewed.
She questioned whether a department focused on bringing in as much money as possible to States coffers was the right body for the job.
But Deputy Parkinson still believed Treasury was the right choice for the role.
‘I would have no objection to a review but I think the role of shareholder is distinct to the role of the regulator and Commerce and Employment and I see no reason why the responsibility should shift from T&R,’ he said.
Deputy McNulty Bauer’s comments came after the role of Guernsey’s regulator was questioned following high profile disagreements with Guernsey Post and Guernsey Electricity.
