First serve to blame – not the schoolwork

HEATHER WATSON will be departing from Melbourne swiftly after her miserable first-round exit from the junior girls tournament at the Australian Open.
But the blame for that has nothing to do with being under-cooked and overwhelmed by school work. Instead it is just down to very poor serving, said her mother, Michelle, from Australia yesterday.
‘Her first serve percentage was very low and you cannot do that on these hard courts,’ she said.
Watson’s serving statistics in the 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 defeat by unknown Chinese player Hao Chen Tang were particularly disappointing.
Only 54% of first serves were in and, worst still, she won just 43% of points on her first serve.
‘That just won’t do,’ said Mrs Watson.
‘It needs to be above 70 to win matches, really.’
