ISLANDERS who were evacuated to Glasgow during the Second World War are raising money to help them say thank you to the city that looked after them in a time of need.
More than 30 got together yesterday to celebrate Burns Night and to raise funds to support the refurbishment of a historic theatre in the city.
Organiser Ann Morris said the evacuees had decided they wanted to do something to say thank you.
‘At a recent reunion in October, it was decided that we wanted to give a gift to the people of Glasgow,’ she said. ‘We decided to help support the refurbishment of the King’s Theatre because it’s such a historic part of Glasgow.’
Parts of the theatre will be returned to what it looked like in the 1930s.
The 105-year-old building is grade A listed.
