Police climb down over small-car parking tickets

Friday 29th January 2010, 2:30PM GMT.

car park ALL tickets issued to drivers who parked oversized cars at North Beach have been cancelled.

In a sharp U-turn, police have admitted being hasty in giving out 55 tickets to drivers whose cars were too long for the small-car parking bays.

And drivers who have already paid fixed penalties can now get their money back.

Police head of operations Superintendent Ian Morellec said that ‘as in many situations, poor communication was central to the issue’.

‘We have identified the shortcomings and processes are in place to ensure we have learnt from this experience.’

Thirty-six spaces for cars 3.6 metres long or shorter, were marked on the north-east corner of the car park.

On the subject of car parks…anyone notice that Jersey has increased parking charges (despite deflation?)and motorists will pay 66p an hour? This is despite the car park fund being in the black to the tune of £12m…it turns out that the SoJ is raiding the car park kitty to fund things like sewerage and care for the elderly.
So, if we follow the States of Jersey example…..Do we really expect car park charges to be (a) a green tax to incentivise changes in our behaviour to transport? or (b) a stealth tax aimed at plugging the gaps in other budgets because the States prefers to “tax and spend” rather than control costs and manage budgets accordingly?

    Carts,

That’s one way of looking at it. Alternatively you could say Guernsey is spending £12m a year of potential income on providing free car parks, while health care and sewerage can go hang!

I had a similar problem myself but at the albert
pier at the end of november.
i inadvertently parked in the small car area there
and couldnt see the signs as they are small, coloured blue and placed above head height!
i got a ticket ,paid for it then wrote a letter
to the cheif of police saying that there should be more signage and it should be yellow and at a visable height.i got a lack lustre reply suggesting i try the enviroment dept. and i never got a refund!perhaps now the chief of police can see where i was coming from on the 26th of november is he now man enough to give me my money back-over to you!

What are we paying the police for ?
They cant stop bad behavior around town at weekends. and now they can’t enforce a simple parking rule. They encourage us to drive small cars and had made parking for small cars. if the car is too long its too long. stick by it.
