Customs will not tolerate attacks on its officers

Saturday 30th January 2010, 2:29PM GMT.

0753595CUSTOMS is concerned about offences committed against its officers.

There were three investigated in 2008, but none the year before.

The offences were the intimidation of an officer during a stop and search at the port, obstructing officers by refusing to leave the address of a search warrant and impeding an officer who attempted to search belongings at the airport.

Chief officer Rob Prow (pictured) said while it was not a dramatic number, obstructing officers was something the service would not tolerate.

‘Looking at the trend it is true that these obstructions do occur from time to time, which is fairly concerning,’ he said.

‘But we are encouraged that they remain at a relatively low level.’

The Customs law enforcement division’s annual report shows that two of the offences were referred for prosecution.

In my experience what goes round comes around.
The harbor custom officers for years have been above their station and have made many law abiding people feel very intimidated. maybe enough is enough.

Customs Officers have too much power and occasionally they meet people who dont like to be searched without good reason. Its a rufty tufty world out there so maybe some extra diplomacy may prevent such intimidating experiences.

Thanks for the insight Rob Prow!

Put your hands up if you believed customs would “tolerate attacks on its officers”.

What is this story? Was there more in the Press that I missed?

Three incidents in two years! Get out now Rob, if not for you, do it for the sake of your loved ones!

This is a real story? 3 attacks in 2008, and none in 2007. Aren’t we in 2010 now?

    slow news day methinks.

Maybe if the officers acted a bit kinder they might get a bit more respect. When I was at uni, I hated coming back through because I always got picked out because of my appearance (general studenty type, long hair and a beard).

    Rob,
Go and work in the real world for a while. 3 attacks, or so called attacks since 2007 WOW! I would be boasting about those figures not worrying. Please GP give us some proper news. Oh and by the way, they wouldn’t have had 3 attacks if their attitude changed and, like Andy said introduced a little diplomacy.
