A PET cat died in a house fire in the Castel yesterday.

The Fire and Rescue Service were called to the blaze at Testa Rosa, Rue du Preel, Castel, at 12.47pm.

No one was inside the building, but the cat was pronounced dead after firefighters tried to rescue it.

Watch commander Steve Wilkes said the outcome could have been much worse.

‘Fortunately, it was detected fairly early and we were called straight away,’ he said. ‘The fire was contained in one room which was under renovation, but there was heavy smoke damage throughout the first and second floors in all of the rooms.’

The owner’s son notified the service after he and other occupants saw smoke coming from the upstairs. They were all in the garage at the bottom of the garden at the time.

It is believed the fire was caused by a fault in an electrical appliance, but an investigation is under way.
