Elena JohnsonELENA JOHNSON’s bid for a Commonwealth Games place is gaining momentum following another superb showing at the Cambridgeshire Open.

The Guernseywoman (pictured) defeated two UK top 10 badminton players to win the women’s singles title. That despite being unseeded.

‘I had several straight set wins to make it to the semi-finals and in the last four I had to play the top seed, last year’s winner and England number nine, Gemma Whiting.

‘Having lost to her in the semis of this event last year, I was extremely pleased to come away with a 21-14, 16-21, 21-12 win.’

Johnson, who is now teaching in the UK, met second seed and England number eight Jo Dix in the final.

‘There was nothing between us at all in the first game but I was lucky to just take it 25-23.

‘Having won the first game, I relaxed and Jo seemed to tighten up. I just kept the shuttle in play and she started to make an increasing number of errors. I took the second game 21-14.’
