FOREST Road Garage’s forecourt was last evening filled with islanders keen to take part in this year’s Bubblegum Bangers Rally.
The first event took place in 2008 and, with 152 places, people were keen to get the chance to take part. There are spaces left for just 10 teams.
‘This is an opportunity for people to meet other ralliers and to hear about the charity they are raising money for,’ said organiser Brin Harrison.
‘This is the first chance for people to register to come on the rally. It’s good to see so many people queuing up outside.’
Each team of at least two has to spend no more than £500 on a car that will have to take them across Europe. It’s a charity fund-raising event and this year the locally-based Tumaini Fund, which helps Aids orphans in Tanzania, has been chosen as the recipient.
The event starts on 5 June and finishes on the 13th. The route takes the drivers through France, Italy, Croatia and Austria, and finishes in Belgium.
Builder Paul Brouard, 29, was registering for his first rally.
‘I think it will be fun. We’ve got our car but I’m reluctant to say what it is. We’ve got a fair bit of work to do to it.’
