Chamber supports putting incinerator contract on hold

Tuesday 9th February 2010, 1:00PM GMT.

Barry CashTHE Chamber of Commerce is supporting an attempt to take the £93.5m. incinerator plans back to the States for final approval.

Deputy Jan Kuttelwascher has tabled a requete, set to be debated at this month’s States meeting, aimed at forcing Public Services to go back to the Assembly before signing the contract with Suez Environnement.

The move is designed to give deputies the opportunity to fully investigate alternative waste solutions while keeping the Suez proposal moving forward.

Chamber director Barry Cash (pictured) issued a statement yesterday saying the move made sense.

‘Keeping options open as long as possible, if there is no significant cost implication, makes good business sense in any major project,’ he said. ‘The Kuttelwascher requete, enabling the States to continue to make themselves fully conversant with subsequent changes in the marketplace before finally signing off the contract with Suez, is a good example of this.

‘In taking this stance, Chamber is not saying the Suez proposal is or is not the best way forward.

‘It is strongly encouraging the States to apply good, well-tried business practice to its decision-making process.’
