Jordan, 12, youngest to win

JORDAN TREBERT produced an outstanding performance to win the men’s singles title in the annual handicap badminton tournament.

The 12-year-old became the youngest winner of this senior title. He made the most of his plus eight handicap, although three of his four matches went to a third set decider.

In the final he played Island Games player Danny Penney, who was on minus 14, the biggest handicap that can be given, meaning he had to win 22 points just to draw level.

The first set was dominated by Trebert, who moved his older opponent all over the court.

With the rally-point scoring system, unforced errors are a heavy penalty, and Penney made too many, losing 21-11.

In the second set he was much more consistent and made his young opponent scamper from corner to corner as he squeezed home 21-18.

In the final set it looked like Penney was taking control and was pulling back the difference. But Trebert kept picking up single points.

However, at 17-all it looked as though the youngster was beaten.

But players often get a little tense as the finishing line is in sight and Penney made three unforced errors to let Trebert get to match point.

Penney got the serve back and took the next point to reach 19-20, but a beautiful cross-court drop followed by a smash up the line gave the match to Trebert.
