HARD working La Mare de Carteret edged an Elizabeth College side littered with representative stars to claim the Spiller Cup.
Due to the incredibly bad weather that the island had been experiencing, the Year 10 and 11 final, which usually takes place under the lights on a GFA club ground in early December, had been postponed a number of times.
It eventually took place at St Sampson’s High two months later than normal.
And La Mare lived up to the occasion as they defeated College who boasted the likes of Nick Rumens, Tony Paluch, JP Payne and Joe Alvarez, who broke into North’s first team last month and scored a wonder goal against Bels.
‘I’m delighted,’ said La Mare’s head coach Jason Dodd, who spent the whole match frantically pacing up and down the sideline, afterwards.
‘We prepared quite extensively for the game today. I’m thrilled for the lads.
‘They’ve been quite nervous about the game. It means a lot to them.
‘It’s the big school game of the year. It was a very tight game and I’m pleased that we came out on top in the end.’
