GUERNSEY’S first Festival of Photography will be officially launched tomorrow.

It will run throughout May and will be staged at various locations around Town.

Organised by the newly-formed Guernsey Committee for the Festival of Photography and sponsored by PPF Partners and Generali Worldwide, it will feature exhibitions by some of the top names in the world: renowned international photographers Simon Norfolk, Josef Koudelka and Judah Passow.

The Guernsey Press is backing the project by acting as media partner throughout the festival.

Committee director and partner at The Gallery, Jean-Christophe Godet, said the aim was to take the arts to people of all ages.

‘Instead of people coming to the arts we will be giving it to them.

‘There is a massive interest in photography in Guernsey because it is easier to understand and look at, whereas a painting in a gallery will be of interest only to those who know a lot about art.

‘So instead of staging this in just a gallery, we are taking it to the streets and giving it to the people.’

As well as the international photographers, local professionals will also display their work. The pieces will take inspiration from the themes ‘invasion, occupation, liberation, celebration’ to tie in with this year’s 65th anniversary of Liberation Day.
