THE financial regulator will not commit to reducing licence fees for businesses after confirming it plans to withdraw funding from the GTA University Centre.

The Guernsey Financial Services Commission was responding to a call for the cut from the Guernsey International Business Association, which said its members wanted to continue contributing to the GTA.

It called for the reduction so that the industry could find another avenue to pay the £435,000-a-year grant.

But the commission said yesterday that fees would be set by the normal budgeting process. ‘The commission is aware of a minority of licensees who do not believe the commission should be funding the GTA because they experience no benefit derived from the courses the GTA provides or facilitates,’ said director of finance and operations Neville Roberts.

‘That said, the commission is aware that Giba believes that its members are broadly content with their continuing to contribute to the funding of the GTA through their licence fees.

‘In these circumstances, when the commission’s funding ceases or reduces, the commission is pleased to note that Giba’s membership will continue to part-fund the GTA, but independently of the commission.’
