GUERNSEY are through to the semi-finals of the Carlsberg FA National League System Cup after an exciting but ‘ugly’ 3-2 win over Hertfordshire Senior County League on Saturday.

Playing under the guise of the Guernsey Senior County League and in front of a 400-plus crowd at the Corbet Field, the island side had to come from a goal behind to take a 2-1 lead before allowing the visitors to equalise at the start of the second half.

With the threat of extra time and the dreaded penalty shootout looming, substitute Craig Young was on hand for a tap-in deep into added time to send the Greens into the next round, two games away from representing England at the UEFA Regions Cup.

It was not a pretty display from the Tony Vance-coached outfit but he was not bothered by that.

‘It was a workman-like performance from us but the bottom line is that to win a game of football, sometimes you’ve got to play ugly,’ said Vance.

‘It’s the result that matters.’
