Head’s rude awakening
Wednesday 17th February 2010, 2:29PM GMT.
ST SAMPSON’S HIGH head teacher Hazel Tetlaw was one of 11 guests evacuated from Alderney’s Braye Beach Hotel after a fire broke out at 4am on Tuesday.
The fire started in the bar of the Divers Inn and spread to the hotel, which is part of the same terrace.
It took the island’s fire crew more than an hour to deal with the incident.
Guests and staff had to be evacuated from their top-floor rooms and spent 30 minutes standing in Braye Street while the building was made safe.
No one was injured and the fire caused minor smoke damage to the Divers.
‘We weren’t kept outside for long and were back in our rooms after an hour-and-a-half,’ said Miss Tetlaw (pictured).
‘There was a bit of rain, but we were soon allowed back into the foyer. The staff made us hot drinks and looked after us. It was all very calm and well organised.’
