Jenson’s a Walker for Johnnie

Thursday 18th February 2010, 2:29PM GMT.

Jenson ButtonFORMULA ONE champion Jenson Button (pictured) spent yesterday filming a 30-second advert for Johnnie Walker whisky but remained tight-lipped about rumours he has moved to the island.

He said he had spent a few days this winter with manager Richard Goddard, who lives here, and fellow driver Andy Priaulx.

Commenting on what he thought about the island he said it had been good for training.

‘I’m looking forward to next season. Before it starts there’s lots of testing to be done before the first race.’

During the afternoon Jenson, dressed in his white race suit, was seen walking up and down along Mont Cuet Road being filmed by a camera on a large rotating crane.

White lines had been stuck on the road, which was frequently sprayed with water by the Fire and Rescue Service to give it a ‘shiny’ look.

About 30 people from production company Home Corp and ad agency BBH were involved in the shoot, which had been set up at around 5am.

i cannot believe this! who decided one of the island’s most important ‘B’ roads is closed throughout a whole working day, without the courtesy or necessity of notice given to the hundreds of ordinary islanders, including many tradesmen and business operatives, who needed to use that route to access swiftly the landfill site and all the neighbouring recycling facilities, in favour of handing the whole shooting match over to mr button, so impoverished that he just had to complete, without any delay or impediment, an almost certainly nonsensical advertisement for his equally impoverished sponsor johnny walker, imploring us all that we need his whiskey? the whole place was shut down like Mulder & Scully were imminent! What looked like smiley police officers were at each end of the ‘don’t-you-local-peasants-dare-disturb-the-BIG-money’ no entry signs and did absolutey sod all to assist the hundreds of incredulous gridlocked motorists (in their CARS mr b) who spread around the back lane to chouet. these were ordinary folk going about their reasonable business pushed aside and out of sight to try and reverse trailers around narrow blind bends among half term walkers and tipper trucks alike. the police did not help them. nor did any marketing, PR or advertising people. nor did mr button or any representative of formula one racing. all totally valueless and not even a thank you. if this is how mr button and his PR and marketing acolytes intend to treat the island if he is to live here, then please forget it.

Well said Bart. I went the wrong way round to the green waste site that day, had to reverse a couple of times and probably put an extra five minutes on my journey to and from. Seeing the Jenson road show along the way was an interesting little distraction.
blah – get a life and stop whining over nothing.

bart, martino et al – yes fair comment – i just warmed to my theme. i don’t like the idea of anyone pushing around the ordinary people for the sake of hollow celebrity, fame and fortune and hanger-on profit. when has PR and marketing or racing driving ever been a proper job anyway? and for goodness sake this was mont cuet road, not up-your-self monaco – it was very python actually. but! button’s industrial wealth and power still just barged right over the common rights !! (what does George think?) … ok, sorry, i’ll leave it now.
