‘Stop misleading island on waste, Mr Brouard’

Saturday 20th February 2010, 2:29PM GMT.

Bernard FlouquetTHE public is being misled over the planned waste plant, the minister in charge has said.

Bernard Flouquet (pictured) was reacting to the latest advert for an alternative waste solution placed in the Guernsey Press by the Stan Brouard Group and Baltic Development Group.

It encourages islanders to support the Vantage Waste Processor system over the department’s preferred Suez plant.

And it suggests that if the States reject Suez, the £93.5 million budget could pay for two new schools and a mental health facility.

Treasury and Resources has said previously that the money would not be available to fund other capital projects.

Deputy Flouquet said the public was being misled by a stream of inaccurate comments and misinformation about the project.

I was one of those who supported the waste treatment choice already made by the States of Deliberation until I read the latest advert in the Press for the Rodney Brouard alternative. I had not realised until reading this advert that the Brouard alternative was cost free. I had thought they would be charging for the service just like all the other proposals. Now I know that it is free of charge, i am a whiolehearted convert to the Brouard proposal.

Well Ted, welcome to the real world.

Perhaps you now understand our frustration with supporters of PSD, who plainly refues to see.

The unfortunate thing is that our proposal was also self funding and zero cost to States, however it gained little support since first proposed in 2005.

A couple of full page ads in the Press and, hey presto.
Rodney gets full support despite comming in at the eleventh and a half hour.

Having said that whilst I don’t support the actual system proposed by Rodney I do ully support the campaign against Suez.

I want the chance to tender equally against all commers and not to be sidelined in favour of a media blitz.

If Rodney had taken the stance of stop Suez and re open tendering, rather than stop Suez and give it to me, he would have had more support.

Where was he before the Rupert Dorey campaign started?

I don’t see it as misleading at all. If the advert said the money COULD be used to fund other projects then Rodney Brouard is absolutely right – it could. if T&R decide to reallocate the funds, that is.

Deputy Flouquet is assuming that T&R won’t change their minds when in fact, if the States reject Suez, there would be recent precedent for just that.

    I agree.
They mask this by saying that the incinerator will produce an income unlike a school etc. But thats not really true because the income that suez will produe is just from an inflated tipping cost to get back they money we borrow. So in effect we could build a new school or whatever and just put our taxes up a little to recoup the money.
I think it amounts to the same thing and dont see a lot of difference.
One way or another WE will be paying for it and i know what i`d rather spend my taxes on.

Thats what people like Roy Bisson and some staes members don`t seem to get or they don`t want us to get it?.

Thats one of the reasons it will be so much cheaper with R Brouards system and probaly steve`s too. It`s called the bleedin obviuos.

    Wow!

The landscape of the waste disposal problem is certainly changing. Now we have Total Waste also offering a free service. It was certainly worth the delay to see these ideas coming forward. Can we now forget about Suez and have a straight fight between those who are proposing to deal with our waste for nothing?

This all reminds me of an episode of the Simpsons called “Marge against the monorail”. People should look it up.

    Not “now” Ted.

    Have been for years.
Rodney’s and Rupert’s media campaigns have just prompted me to become more public about it, and not get left behind in the media storm.

Based on that logic vegetarians are actually carnivores, because they COULD eat meat and only choose not too ….

Non smokers are actually smokers, because they COULD smoke if they chose to do so …

We are all criminals because we COULD go out and do something illegal but most of us choose not to ….

And before anyone says anything, no I’m not a freind of Bernie, or PSD, I don’t work for them, I don’t think I really know any of them. Just trying to make a point that’s all.

The money is being made available because it can be paid back. If the States wants to start charging for education, or reintroduced charging at the PEH, I’m sure T&R would lend the money to build as many schools and hospitals as you like ….

I’m not saying we should spend the money on Suez. I’m not saying we shouldn’t spend it on schools. Just that as it stands, policy allows the former and not the latter, and quite sensibly so ( from a financial standpoint anyway … )

    Ted

Nobody is proposing to deal with our waste for free …. Maybe some have a lower startup cost to the taxpayer than others ( or indeed none ) but in the long term we are all going to have to pay to dispose of our waste whoever is doing it ( and however they do it )

An interesting thought has just occured to me ….. if someone came up with a zero startup cost incinerator, how much opposition would there be ?????

I remember it Lyle – and an appropriately ironic name you have too!

Incidentally this also reminded me of the episode when Homer gets put in charge of Springfield’s waste disposal – have you seen that one?

What I find very strange is the fact about this rubbish business; for Donkeys years (pardon the pun) the old quarries have been quite useful, and nary a word- however no more Quarries.

Now then Boat owners wanted berth for their boats (no moan there) so places were made, Beaucette marina, our dear old North beach, St Sampson, town harbour (Various) again no moan about those.
Yet I get a dollar to centime, if a new marina was needed they would soon find another place to enclose.

Well why can’t they do the same wall it in, drain it; then use for many many years for rubbish, then in many years time to come a bit more land for Dear old Guernsey,

And also by that time a suitable means of Rubbish riddance will have been found.

    Just wild thoughts dear folk.
