Dale’s risk brings reward

DALE GARLAND ignored selectors’ advice not to run a second race in 24 hours to win himself a place in the Great Britain team for next month’s World Indoor Championships in Doha.
After a disappointing result at the Aviva Grand Prix at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham on Saturday, Garland opted to run again on the same track 24 hours later at the Midland Counties Open.
He justified that decision by running his second fastest time indoors ever – 46.95sec. – to not only win the Midland title but also achieve the individual standard set by the GB selectors for the world championships.
Yesterday came confirmation from UK Athletics that he will run both the individual 400 and be in the 4×400 squad for the Doha meeting in Qatar on the weekend 12-14 March.
