HEDGE veg suppliers have been losing out to a thief who has reportedly been re-selling the produce he has stolen.

The Guernsey Press has received reports of incidents in which an unknown islander had been taking large quantities of produce, including flowers, without paying and then selling it at their own stall.

Police confirmed that they were investigating the suspicions, but no one has yet been arrested.

Tony Hobbs, who has a stall in Les Abreuveurs Road, St Sampson’s, has suffered losses.

‘People have been talking about it and I know that the person has taken some of my potatoes, but thankfully it stopped,’ he said.

‘I’m lucky because they have only taken about £10- to £12-worth, but I know some people have lost a lot more than that.

‘One person has lost about £100-worth of flowers.’

Shame on them – hedge veg stalls are one of the things that defines the unique identity of our island.

Anyone local who steals from a hedge veg stall should be ashamed to call themselves a Guernseyman. Anyone not from Guernsey who steals from a hedge veg stall should get back on the boat right now because we don’t want them here.

Well said CD,I think anybody who ruins the reputation of the Island of Guernsey and everything thing it stands for should be ashamed or if not a local resident removed. I would be very suprised to find out in the end that the culprit is a local person.

Mark Rimmer….well said! I would be amazed if any local person had ever committed a crime…..

Indeed, the culprit would not have been local. It is only the menacing influence from outsiders that has brought a wave of crime to this once pure Isle.

If you want my view, this is the work of foreigners who smuggled themselves here to find work and a have a good wash.

Rimmer, I don’t think you go far enough, we must remove all ‘non-locals’ at once!
