GUERNSEY’S next Olympian could be among those shortlisted to be crowned Flybe’s Island Hero.
Judges have decided on their shortlists for each of the categories.
The initiative, in association with the Guernsey Press, will see winners of three categories – education, sport and charity – each awarded a bursary of £7,000.
The finalists will be announced in the newspaper over three days from Monday 8 March – then it is down to the public to decide.
Former Southampton and England footballer and Flybe ambassador Matt Le Tissier led the panel and said he looked for different strengths in different categories.
‘I consider how many people it will help but in some cases there are individuals who have high aspirations to represent their country or get to the Olympic Games, which is something I can really relate to,’ said Mr Tissier.
He was joined by Guernsey Press managing director Mark Lewis, Flybe general manager market development Ian Taylor, Education minister Carol Steere and David Farrimond, chairman of the Association of Guernsey Charities.
