‘Only quick-fix politicians block way to zero waste’
Wednesday 24th February 2010, 2:29PM GMT.
AROUND 400 islanders spent much of last evening applauding Professor Paul Connett as he outlined how a zero waste strategy could be implemented in Guernsey.
He used comic anecdotes to address the subject at a public meeting at Beau Sejour.
Prof. Connett (pictured) reiterated the same message throughout his presentation – that Guernsey could recycle and reuse 100% of its rubbish.
This did not mean using mass-burn incinerators that polluted the environment and endangered health, he said, but separating, re-using and recycling waste.
‘You have a beautiful island to protect and as far as recycling is concerned, there are few obstacles.’
Prof. Connett said kerbside recycling would only boost the recycling rate to around 30% but with food composting it could reach 60%.
The presentation covered 10 steps by which zero waste could be achieved. Initiatives were needed to cut waste that could not be reused, repaired or recycled.
