Willliam and his mum get to go to Iceland – thanks to Press

William CeillamA PLANNED trip to Iceland is still on for William Ceillam after a Guernsey Press enquiry convinced an airline to waive a ‘ridiculous’ £173 charge for changing his mother’s name on the booking.

The 21-year-old fund custody worker booked the August holiday with his mother before the pair realised he had reserved it under her married name by mistake.

She had recently got divorced and reverted to her maiden name but, despite Mr Ceillam explaining the situation, Thomas Cook informed him it would cost £173 to change the details.

He got in touch with the Guernsey Press to describe his disgust at the charge.

‘It seems ridiculous that they can charge that much money for changing the name on a computer screen, which is essentially what it is,’ he said.

‘There was no discussion about why it would cost that much. It was very much take it or leave.’

Mr Ceillam (pictured) was planning on cancelling the trip until he learnt that the company and airline Icelandair had agreed to waive the charge.

I think this man was very lucky to get anything back at all. This happened to me with easyjet, and as I was stuck in the uk I was forced to pay full fare to continue.
