Guernsey Post offers voluntary redundancy to up to 15

Saturday 27th February 2010, 2:29PM GMT.

Guernsey Post HQGUERNSEY POST is asking staff to take voluntary redundancy.

A letter has been sent to 90 of them in administration, retail and management areas, but not delivery staff.

A spokesman said it hoped between 10 and 15 people would take up the offer.

‘Guernsey Post is carrying out a review of its cost and structure in the management, retail and admin areas to make sure that it is properly equipped to deal with changes in the postal market.

‘At present we are only looking at cost reductions in these areas and have no plans to ask for voluntary redundancy from posties,’ he said.

Staff have been asked to decide by Monday week.

Who ever is supposed to be managing the Post Office is crazy. In todays Guernsey Press we are tol by the ‘spokesman’that looking for redundancies in retail but not in delivery staff. But the Press article goes on to say that it is a response to reduced volumes of postbeing mailed. So why not cut postal delivery staff? And then there is a job advert today for retail supervisor! Why are they making people redundant and taking on new people in the same area of the business. I feel sorry for all the Post Office workers being led by managers who seem to not know what they are doing.

Tom, the answer is quite simple, in any business there are postions that are “Overhead” and there are others perhaps in the same area which are not considered in the same way.
Guernsey Post is being forced into making efficiencies by the regulator and the “overhead” areas are where perhaps those efficiencies can be made.
Whilst GPL is bound by its’ Service Obligation, also by the way imposed on GPL by the regulator but not on any competitors, a reduction in postal delivery staff is more difficult.
As is always the case nowadays, there is a bigger picture to consider but we, the general public only seem to get the Polarised views of the Guernsey Press, Regulator or GPL.
