MADEIRANS in Guernsey have been rallying round to help those affected by devastating flash floods in their homeland.

To date, 42 people have been confirmed dead following mudslides the weekend before last on the mid-Atlantic Portuguese island. At least 120 were injured and 490 left homeless.

Sandpiper employs around 20 Madeirans at its Checkers superstore at Admiral Park.

Deputy manager Ian Carman said the company would support staff affected by the tragedy in any way it could.

It donated £1,000 to the appeal and collection buckets were placed on all shop tills on Saturday.

Supervisor Dilly Correia Ozard moved to Guernsey from Madeira 30 years ago but her parents and other family still live there.

‘I left Madeira a long time ago, but it is still my home and it is devastating to see what is happening there,’ she said.
