Former States PR man questions role he left

Tuesday 2nd March 2010, 2:30PM GMT.

James FallaTHE first ever director of communications at the States is not surprised his role has been left vacant.

James Falla, pictured, who left the States just over three weeks ago to join Image PR, said it was a wise decision.

‘It makes sense for the States, in the current climate, to take a step back and consider what they really want and need, and how they are going to get it.

‘Unfortunately, the States cannot do right here for doing wrong. If they employ a professional, it is criticised; if they use a consultant, it’s even worse.’

But he does question if his role worked out as intended from when he started in October 2007, having joined because he believed government sometimes struggled with its perception in the media and he wanted to boost its reputation.

‘I think the role could have been much wider than it was originally conceived. I knew I had expertise in the specific area of media relations and tried to spread that as widely through the States as I could.’

He also doubts whether the States set-up as it currently stands requires dedicated media and public relations staff.
