Sarnian duo hit by ‘diabolical’ scoring

Tuesday 2nd March 2010, 2:30PM GMT.

Matt JenningsMATT JENNINGS’ ABA career ended on a sour note as himself and James Woolnough fell foul to some indifferent judging in the preliminary rounds of the ABA Western Counties Championships.

The island’s leading boxer (pictured) lost on points to Sam Pumfrey in their cruiserweight clash at Broadplain Boxing Club on Sunday and it was a similar story for light-middleweight Woolnough when he met James Taylor.

This was the 33-year-old former Western Counties and British novice champion Jennings last year in the nationals.

‘It’s a shame for Jennings as it’s his last year,’ said the Amalgamated Boys’ Club’s head coach Graham Guilbert.

‘He would have liked to have finished on a high. The scoring was absolutely diabolical.

‘Jennings was scoring with some body shots which they didn’t pick up on. At the end of the first round he was 3-0 down.’
