JERSEY’S door is open to accept Guernsey’s waste and it is waiting for the call, its Transport and Technical Services minister has confirmed.

St Brelade constable Mike Jackson has not heard from Guernsey since plans to build an incinerator at Longue Hougue were scrapped in the States last week, but said he was keen to receive a call soon.

Jersey could make as much as £4m. a year burning Guernsey’s waste in its new incinerator, an attractive move for its States, which is looking to plug a projected £50m. hole in its finances.

‘It’s an expensive plant and if we can use it to its maximum commercial potential, it must be worth considering,’ said Mr Jackson.

‘We would have to establish the cost benefits and environmental health impact but, based on the advice we have received so far, it should be achievable.’

Jersey’s La Collette plant, which is due to be finished in summer 2011, will have spare capacity for at least the next 10 years.

Should this be called off, the relative level of public outcry compared with the level shown recently will prove whether the NIMBYs were, in fact, concerned about the environmental impact, or if they were simply being NIMBYs. We shall see.

So Jersey has an expensive plant which won’t be used to its maximum potential unless they import waste from Guernsey for at least ten years.

The Suez sales team must have earned their croissant down there then.

I wonder where we would have had to import rubbish from to feed our proposed monster?
