Tax expert sees little for island to fear in naming and shaming

0412115.jpgTAX dodgers are to face a public naming and shaming from April.

HM Revenue and Customs will publish the details of individuals and companies who have deliberately evaded tax of more than £25,000, on its website.

The measure, which was first announced in last year’s Budget but until now had lacked exact details as to how it would operate, will also reveal addresses and details of the evasion.

The first names to appear on the list will probably not be until some point in 2011 with the tool not being used retrospectively.

Ernst & Young partner Graham Parrott (pictured) believes the naming and shaming is a smart move and not something to worry too much about from a local perspective

‘Yes, at some point in time there could be someone on the list with connections to Guernsey, but I think we will probably find that most of them will have no offshore connection whatsoever.

‘I think it’s a really good idea in principle. People should be paying the right amount of taxes, so if this discourages people then good.’

Mr Parrott said as long as the process was handled in the right way then he could not see a problem.
