Words of diplomacy after crunch meeting

Tuesday 9th March 2010, 2:29PM GMT.

Martyn Mann, GTAGTA University Centre directors were saying little yesterday about discussions held at a crunch meeting.

The board has been split ever since the release of a Frontier Economics report on how to improve the skills of Guernsey’s workforce.

Chairman Martyn Mann (pictured) issued a statement condemning its recommendations and then resigned when he was heavily reprimanded by some the agency’s trustees – who are also directors.

Several board members support the report and were angered by Mr Mann’s stance. They include Commerce and Employment minister Carla McNulty Bauer and Guernsey Financial Services Commission director-general Nik van Leuven, who are also both trustees.

They are supported by fellow board members Jon Buckland, chief officer at Commerce and Employment, and Bank Sarasin chief Ken Gibbs, who sat in as a nominee trustee at the meeting which led to Mr Mann’s resignation.

However, it is believed that the majority of the nine remaining board members were fully supportive of Mr Mann and his statement about the report.

Acting chairman David Leafe issued a statement yesterday afternoon on behalf of the board, but it gave little away about what was likely to have been a tense meeting.
