Conmen target elderly people in their homes
Saturday 13th March 2010, 2:29PM GMT.
GUERNSEY police are warning pensioners to be vigilant after three elderly people were targeted at home by fraudsters.
Inspector Geoff Austin (pictured) said nothing was stolen but the police are asking islanders to look out for elderly neighbours and relatives.
‘Examples of the type of calls have been people purporting to need to check TV or electric supplies or persons offering to do work on property that may not need to be done.’
He said nobody, especially the elderly, should let anyone into their home unless they have made an appointment first.
‘The public are reminded that people from official departments – police, electricity, gas, etc. – should be in possession of photographic ID and to check this before allowing entry and, if at all concerned, leave the caller outside and call the department concerned to verify the caller is genuine.’
