THE third race of the De Putron Duathlon Series took place on a freezing morning last Sunday at Mont Varouf.

The temperatures were so low that part of the cycle route had to be changed due to ice on the road. But despite the cold conditions, 32 brave competitors turned up for a 2.5-mile run around the reservoir, followed by a fast 12-mile bike, then another 2.5-mile run.

The downhill start from Mont Varouf school was fast and furious. Overtaking opportunities are scarce on the reservoir paths so it was important to get a good position early on.

Luke Walton took the lead, but unfortunately had to pull up due to injury.

Alan Rowe then set the pace while experienced runner Dave Crossland, taking part in only his second duathlon, put in a great first run to head out on the bike in second place followed by Jonathan Greenfield and Ian Scholes.
