Internet cyberspace INTERNET use is on the up and more people are using it to talk.

The Office of Utility Regulation’s Telecommunications Market Data Report, published yesterday, stated that there were 22,600 internet subscribers at the end of June 2009 – a 2% increase since the end of 2008.

Overall, the telecoms market grew by 7% in the year to June 2009, with an annual turnover of £78m.

Despite that, the number of minutes in the fixed telecoms market was down by 6% as competition from the mobile market and web services such as Skype increased.

Sure is the dominant internet operator, with 76% of subscribers.

Nonetheless, Airtel and Wave continue to gain customers from Sure in the mobile market. Each operator’s share in the first half of last year was respectively 7%, 19% and 74%.

can anyone explain, why it is that Broadband is so expensive in Guernsey for such poor download speeds.

I pay £24.99/month for 2mb speed. In Jersey, Sure charge exactly the same price for 8mb speed. In the Isle of Man both suppliers charge £25 (that includes VAT) for 16mb.

Simply put Sure charge what they can and all the other providers have to put up with it. No matter how you spin the numbers, Sure have a 100% monopoly on ADSL lines in Guernsey. Not to mention Sure get quarterly line rental on top.

All of the ISPs have to pay Sure for the wholesale ADSL connection and that is the most significant part of the monthly figure. In fact the wholesale 2 meg price in Guernsey is almost the total 2meg retail price in Jersey.

It is interesting to note that whilst JT spent a considerable sum of money improving their infrastructure to support 8meg, Sure have let their network stagnate.

I’d like to see what the OUR plan to do about this situation.

It would be interesting to see the reasons why the OUR have taken years to realise that broadband is expensive and slow in Guernsey. The UK are talking about superfast speeds 50mb in the future, Guernsey may get 8mb. We seem to be a few steps behind everyone else. As for me and probably a significant number of other residents I spend more on broadband than my mobile but the OUR has spent so much time and effort on mobiles and very little on broadband. If the price came down to a more realistic rate then the take up would be even greater.
