JERSEY’S under-15 schoolboys retained the Star Trophy on Saturday following a hard-earned victory against their Guernsey counterparts at Springfield Stadium.
In a game which struggled to get going at times, mainly because the teams cancelled each other out, Jersey eventually got home with goals from Jamie Gray and substitute Ben Smylie before Guernsey grabbed a late consolation.
While Jersey celebrated at the finish, Guernsey were reflecting on what might have been as Jersey goalkeeper Jordan Le Guyader – who was later named man-of-the-match – denied them with a magnificent reflex save when Jersey were leading 1-0 midway through the second half.
Smylie looked to have settled the issue when scoring Jersey’s second goal a minute from the end, only for Guernsey to pull a goal back immediately following a super individual effort from Ryan Lamb.
The extra four minutes played were nervous for the hosts, but they kept their composure and keeping Guernsey at distance they were ecstatic when the final whistle sounded.
