Jersey prisoners cannot be sent home from here

Monday 15th March 2010, 2:29PM GMT.

Alan Le PageJERSEY prisoners held in Guernsey cannot be sent straight back to their home island.

They must move to a jail in England or Wales first because legislation to enable them to switch islands directly does not exist.

The same applies to foreign prisoners who want to return to their country of origin – they have to apply for an onward transfer from a jail in England or Wales.

While Jersey is currently discussing a repatriation deal for foreign prisoners with UK officials, those here can transfer under an EU-wide convention or the Commonwealth scheme for transfer of convicted offenders.

Principal officer of security Alan Le Page (pictured) said prisoners would not be transferred automatically and some foreign prisoners would not apply for a transfer because they considered Guernsey their home or had achieved local status.

The reason that WE have to pay is because it was US who imprisoned them!

Or perhaps you think that every time an individual is imprisoned in a jurisdiction that is not their own, they ought to be shipped back to their home country without delay. Have you got any idea of the logistical problems of such a policy?

The main costs of running the prison are fixed, the variable costs such as food are minimal. It makes little difference overall whether there are 50, 75 or 100 people in there. Let’s not start panicking about an almost non-existent problem.

I would be surprised if we don’t have to pay for their keep if we,who convicted them, send them off to their own country
