Perrio slashes island 5k mark
Tuesday 16th March 2010, 2:30PM GMT.
A WEEK after returning from a training camp in Portugal, Louise Perrio smashed the island 5,000m record – but still fell 15 seconds short of the 16min. 50sec. Commonwealth Games selection standard.
In a hastily assembled race at Foote’s Lane, Perrio removed 16 seconds from the previous record to set a new island mark of 17-04.9.
Despite still requiring another 15sec. improvement, Perrio (pictured) is optimistic about reaching her target.
‘This is my first track race in six months and I’m not in tip-top condition yet. I’d expect to go quicker next time.’
Needing to lap in under 81 seconds she was on schedule until the halfway point of the 12-and-a-half lap event, but the fast pace gradually took its toll and she drifted slightly off schedule.
Veteran Dave Dyke pulled clear and won the race in 16-58.5.
