GUERNSEY’S hopes of holding on to the British Isles women’s indoor singles title that Ali Merrien has won three times in four years were dashed in Perth yesterday where Lucy Beere was outplayed by Scottish champion Julie Forrest.

Forrest regained the title she first won in 2004 with a 21-12 victory that underlined her class, but Beere improved as the game went on and showed fighting spirit to bring the best out of her high-flying opponent.

‘It’s funny, but I’m not a bit disappointed, because I enjoyed the contest, and learnt a lot from Julie, who is a great player,’ said Beere.

‘I was a bit nervous to start with, and gave her too big a start, but I wasn’t going to roll over and I think she was beginning to get worried towards the end.’
