Even cheapest fuel is heading towards £5 a gallon (or 110ppl)

Thursday 18th March 2010, 2:29PM GMT.

petrol pricesTHE price of petrol has risen and could be more than £1 a litre – even from the cut-price forecourts – by the end of the year, predicts one garage owner.

In the UK, the AA is forecasting that petrol could hit a record average high of £1.20 a litre in the next few weeks, because of the increase in the wholesale price.

Locally, motorists will have noticed a difference with the price rising by 5p in only two weeks.

Braye Road Garage director Mark Finn said they were selling petrol at the highest price since they took over the garage four years ago. In 2008, a litre of unleaded cost 92.9p per litre, but it now cost 94.9p.

‘Obviously we are getting people complaining that it’s more expensive, which it is to be fair to them,’ he said. ‘We don’t expect it to go down, but it would be good if it did.’

I sympathise with commercial operators but for the rest of us isn’t this a great incentive to cut down on our car use?
As Bungle says it’ll soon be summer and it’s spring at the weekend – at 5.32pm on Saturday to be precise….

Don’t forget to add to this global price the suggested 50 pence per litre under the States green strategy. I make that about £7.30 per gallon if that gets passed
