Jersey 2, Guernsey 3
GUERNSEY won a pulsating encounter of an hockey inter-insular at Les Quennevais on Saturday with a last-gasp short corner strike from Matt Watson.
With Jersey taking a surprise win in last year’s match at Foote’s Lane, a draw would have ensured that they held onto the crown.
And with the score tied at two-all, it looked like Guernsey were not going to get their hands on the cherished silverware.
But when a short corner was awarded to the Greens and the final whistle was blown to ensure that it was going to be the last act of the match, a hush fell over the large crowd in the stands and on the sidelines.
The pressure was on striker Watson, who already had two goals to his name, but when he cleanly struck his effort right down the middle of the goal and Jersey keeper Dan Tardivel somehow missed it, the Sarnians on and off the pitch were sent into raptures.
Colombian’s Watson was a very emotional player with red eyes immediately after the game.
