A METEOR was seen over the islands at the weekend, it emerged yesterday.
Teacher Patrick Devaney spotted a fireball in the sky as he left his girlfriend’s house on Sunday night.
Mr Devaney, who teaches at Le Rondin, said it appeared to have come from nowhere.
‘I was returning from my girlfriend’s flat at the Vega Apartments near Checkers,’ he said. ‘I was looking across to the islands and this thing flew across the sky very quickly. It had a large fiery tail behind it.’
Mr Devaney, 46, a literacy support teacher, said he has seen many shooting stars in the past, but this had been nothing like those. It was a mass that travelled from the south of Herm diagonally over Town and disappeared. He mentioned it to colleagues yesterday and one said her husband had seen it near Vazon.
Mr Devaney registered his sighting with the British Astronomical Association.
Jersey’s Met Office confirmed it had received a report of a meteor over Gorey on Sunday.
