Guernsey 3, Dorset Premier League 2
ROSS ALLEN fired Guernsey into its first national football final in dramatic fashion at the Corbet Field on Saturday.
Guernsey were heading for crushing disappointment at 2-1 down to the Dorset Premier League with 10 minutes remaining, but an own goal followed by the Rangers striker’s stoppage-time winner means the green-and-whites are now just one win away from a place in European competition as England’s representatives.
The winners of the other semi-final between the Liverpool County Premier and the Yorkshire Old Boys leagues lie waiting in the final which is most likely to be staged in the island, probably at Foote’s Lane, in May.
The match-winner had only one thing in his mind as the ball fell to him with 90 minutes up.
‘I thought I can’t miss another good chance,’ and to the delight of a crowd in the region of 600-plus he didn’t.
With defeat looming, coach Tony Vance threw every attacking option he had at Dorset and it paid off.
‘We had our top six [goalscorers] going at them in the end and we were going to score,’ added Allen.

Fantastic result but this is a competition we should win given the restrictions on who can play and the obviously lack of a semi professional game in Guernsey and if we were in the UK most of Guernsey’s players would be ruled out. I for one wish we were still in teh proper county leagues where there was a real challenge

Realist – fair point. But don’t tell me you wish you were still playing in South West Counties, a competition which, by the end, not even the players were interested in. Virtually nobody in the UK is interested in county football.
Let’s just celebrate this result, go on, win the final, and move Guernsey football upwards and onwards. We do have some good players who need testing more than what they get in Division One.
Come on Guernsey!

As an ex-resident of Guernsey who still keeps up with the local football scene over there, I send my heartiest congratulations to squad and fans on a great result, and wish them all the best in the final.
Just a thought, but if Guernsey’s footballer’s need more competitive game, why doesn’t the GFA try to enter the island side into one of the UK reserve leagues or maybe even the conference south? It would be great for the players and fans alike and would benefit tourism on the island.
