Noise and pollution fears at Forest site marked for industry

Monday 29th March 2010, 2:29PM BST.

Col Blondel FOREST residents are against an area of land behind their homes being turned into an industrial site.

They are concerned about increased noise and pollution.

Independent planning inspector Jill Kingaby says the one-acre site close to Rue des Landes, next to the airport, should be redesignated.

If the States agrees next month, this site along with three others could soon be home to Fred-in-the-shed businesses. The site is currently occupied by glasshouses.

Ms Kingaby said she recognised concerns from residents that the change of use would lead to greater noise and dirt, as well as more traffic but determined the impact would be negligible.

Col Blondel (pictured), 85, has lived in Rue de la Planque for 38 years. Her garden backs onto the site and she can see the glasshouses from her kitchen window.

She is worried about what kind of businesses could be set up.

Good thing she lives over here then, along that road.. Local islanders do not want this kind of impact right on their door step, the land at Longue Houge is perfect for these industrial operations!

Hmmm – Miss Kingaby – name sounds familiar. Would that be the same wise lady who is making decisions about another part of the island recently in the news? Bet she’s not local ;)

expat – are you a wum? I suspect you are, but I’ll bite.

It will be the same Ms Kingaby that has been invited over to independently review certain strategic planning decisions so as to ensure that planning decisions on this island are not (all) taken on the basis of back-scratching who-knows-who relationships.

The GP has chosen to report each decision separately, thus allowing GG to get her knickers in a twist for each decision which advises that land is suitable for development, while conveniently ignoring the decisions that went the other way (eg Portinfer).

Do you really want such important decisions to be taken without independent review?

Wow Jill Kingaby is a very skilled wordsmith.

Unless I’m mistaken she’s managed to squeeze a huge contradiction into half a sentence.

“the change of use would lead to greater noise and dirt, as well as more traffic but determined the impact would be negligible”

Well far be it from me to say, but to someone who has lived in the same place for 38 years, a sudden increase in noise, dirt and traffic is definately not negligable.

I appreciate that the island needs to be making these initiatives, but there are much better sites.

Well chris, I’d have thought all the industrial sites are better in the north.

After all, it’ll be much less of commute for all the workers there.
