Rejection of incinerator could hold up sewage plant

On BBC Guernsey’s phone-in yesterday, deputies Allister Langlois and Roger Domaille warned that last week’s States decision not to reinstate Suez Environnement’s £93.5m. energy from waste plant would have ongoing repercussions.

Deputy Tony Spruce had brought the matter back to the States for a second vote after the proposal was thrown out by a majority of one at February’s meeting. Last week’s vote was a more-decisive 27 to 16.

Deputy Domaille (pictured) said figures for the Suez plant had included dealing with sludge from a future sewage plant.

‘The problem is that any sort of treatment will leave us with a waste residue,’ he said.

‘Now something has to be done with that residue. In other jurisdictions I believe it is spread on the fields, but we could not do this in Guernsey because of the water catchment – the same reason we can’t put salt on the roads.’

All I know is the sludge will be a lot easier disposed of compared with the bottom ash.

This article looks like Spruce is wanting avoidance of too much egg on his face. A sore loser by all accounts.
