ARTIST Andy Goldsworthy has started his Alderney Stones project.
The sculptor arrived last week and has so far created three clay boulders at his makeshift studio in Fort Albert.
About a dozen will be made in the next fortnight. Each will contain materials that will appear once the structures erode.
Bricks, poppies and wheat have been placed in the first three boulders, which measure more than 5ft in diameter. Mr Goldsworthy is hoping to position the structures in locations including Saye and Longis bays and Braye Harbour. Once positioned, the boulders will form part of an island tour which will take about six hours to complete.
Cheshire-born Mr Goldsworthy, who has devised similar projects in the USA, Canada, Japan and at the North Pole, explained the artistic process.
‘Once the boulders are created, we will leave them to set for a year. All being well, this time next year they will be ready to be placed around the island.
‘We had a few problems with the first couple as the wet clay caused fractures. We had to remake one but we’ve got it all sorted now. Everything is held in place and they’re incredibly solid. Trying to break them apart is almost impossible.’
