WEST coast roads were under water this morning as a 10-metre tide combined with winds gusting to 55mph.

Perelle was worst hit when the tide peaked at 8.14.

The coast road was closed because it was under up to two feet of water and strewn with debris.

Civil protection officers were at the scene and Sergeant Martin Harris said they would be monitoring the weather over the coming days.

‘I have lived here all my life and I have never seen anything like it. Some of the waves are absolutely huge,’ said Sgt Harris.

Police were advising motorists to avoid the west coast.

‘L’Eree, Vazon and Cobo are open but they are almost impassable,’ he said.

States Works general manager Nigel Dorey said a team had been out since the early hours assessing the situation.

‘It’s been really bad – the waves are coming over 15-20ft high. It’s probably as bad as I have ever seen,’ he said.

Strange that Sgt Harris has never seen waves like it in all his life. I lived on the West Coast during a high spring tide & the waves were breaking over the roof of the house at Perelle.

R Le Messurier – perhaps Sgt Harris was on the East Coast at the time? ;-)
